Ann M. Sherman
Interim Vice President (VP) & Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Ann M. Sherman became the Interim Vice President of Administration & Finance at San Francisco State University in January 2017. She is responsible for all facets of Administration and Finance, including Budget and Fiscal Affairs; Information Technologies; Facilities Operations; Risk & Data Analytics; Physical Planning & Development; Human Resources; Audit & Advisory Services; and Business Operations. She currently serves on the President’s Cabinet and provides wide-ranging direction and guidance for the campus according to strategic needs and CSU directives.
Ann previously served as the Senior Associate Vice President for Human Resources, joining the SF State leadership team in April, 2014. Her former positions have prepared her well for the scope of her current responsibilities, having served as the Director of Human Resources/EO Officer/Title IX Officer for seven years at Northern Michigan University (NMU); successively responsible positions in the medical device industry, culminating in her role as Vice President of Business & Customer Support for Viasys Corp.; and strategic and Division Controller positions during her seven years with Michigan Consolidated Gas Company.
Sherman’s passion is “releasing the power of human potential in organizations.” Her parents were both educators, and Sherman finds a strong fit with her personal values and mission of higher education. Ann is most proud of the results of SF State’s Emerging Leaders Program, which has prepared the most promising emerging leaders to assume enhanced responsibilities.
Sherman earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan at Dearborn and conducted her graduate work at Wayne State University’s Industrial/Organizational Ph.D. program in Detroit. Her oldest son is a graduate from the University of Michigan, and her younger son is attending NMU. With her enthusiasm, optimism, and sense of humor, Ann keeps grounded and focused on continuous improvement and practical problem-solving.

Interim Associate Vice President of Fiscal Affairs
Brian Fahnestock was appointed as the Interim Associate Vice President for Fiscal Affairs in September 2016. Previously he was the Interim Vice Chancellor for Finance and Facilities for the North Orange County Community College District and prior to that he was Vice Chancellor for Administration at the Ventura County Community College District. Brian has over 20 years’ experience in government and higher education finance. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and a Master’s degree in Financial Management from the Navy Postgraduate School.
Interim Associate Vice President of Human Resources
Cheree Carvalho Aguilar currently serves as the Interim Associate Vice President for Human Resources. She joined SF State in 2016, and prior to joining the university, Cheree held the positions of Deputy Executive Director and Senior Director of Human Resources and IT Services for San Jose State University’s Research Foundation for the past 10 years. She joined the Research Foundation with over 15 years of private and public sector experience. She is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and has a rich background in Human Resources, HRIS and core IT system interfacings.
Cheree takes pride in her leadership philosophy which includes respect for all persons, the championing of curiosity, challenge, and participatory governance and transparency. She believes joint decision making promotes dialogue, honesty, and diversity which she feels strongly are all fundamental and necessary components of a healthy community and organization. Cheree holds both a BA in Management and an MA in Leadership, from St. Mary's College of California.
Executive Director of Budget Administration & Operations
Elena Stoian currently serves as the Executive Director of Budget Administration & Operations. Since joining the budget team in March 2015 from Physical Planning & Development, she has progressed from budget manager to director of Budget Administration & Operations. Stoian comes to SF State with more than 11 years of experience, having served as an administrative business officer at San Jose State. She has over 16 years of experience in administration, physical plant financial management, capital planning and construction, operational budgeting, financial modeling and forecasting, and enterprise resource planning implementation.
Associate Vice President of Business Operations
Grace Crickette, AVP of Business Operations, is an accomplished administrator with leadership experience in a variety of industries, ranging from not-for-profit to Fortune 500, and domestic and foreign operations. She served as Chief Risk Officer for the UC System for almost a decade and has been working with SF State on a variety of initiatives over the past year. Grace is an alum of the University of Redlands and Harvard Business School. She holds professional designations in Information Technology, Audit, Safety, Risk, Human Resources, and Compliance.
Jay Orendorff currently serves as the Executive Director for Risk and Analytics. Jay is a graduate of the CSU and earned a Master of Science in Demographics with a minor in statistics from Utah State University. He began his history at SF State as a senior analyst in Institutional Research and later as the Senior Budget Analyst in Budget Administration & Operations.
Most recently, Jay served as Director for Administration & Finance and then, Executive Director for Budget and Risk Management. Jay has over 23 years of CSU experience in enterprise business operations, institutional planning and financial management. Jay has had the unique opportunity of accumulating knowledge and experience from several departments on campus.
Interim Associate Vice President of Audit & Advisory Services
Maureen Pasag was appointed Interim Associate Vice President of Audit & Advisory Services in February 2017. Previously she has served as the Associate Vice President of Fiscal Affairs from 2014-2016. She possesses more than 16 years of experience in finance and audits in both the private and public sectors; including within the CSU system. She has worked at Fortune 500 companies, which include First American Title Insurance Co., Pulte Homes, and Station Casinos, Inc. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from CSU Northridge and is a licensed CPA in CA.
Associate Vice President & CIO of Information Technology Services
Nish Malik currently serves SF State as the Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Information Technology Services (ITS). Nish has more than 17 years of experience in information technology in both the private and public sectors. During his three years at SF State, Nish has served in various roles within IT including Policy & Planning Officer, Director of Special Projects and most recently Assistant Vice President, which has prepared him to manage ITS operations.
Nish's ability to encourage collaboration, and his team building spirit have helped advance the completion of several complex IT projects, all of which have occurred in an efficient manner. As a committed member of the SF State community, Nish volunteered as one of the first board members for the Employee University. Nish is also responsible for co-chairing the Executive Technology Committee, Campus Technology Committee, and the Data Governance Steering Committee. Nish received his MBA, and a MS in Computer Information Systems from USF.
Senior Associate Vice President of Physical Planning & Development
Thomas Lollini has served as Senior Associate Vice President of Physical Planning & Development/Campus Architect since June of 2015. Tom was previously the Associate Vice Chancellor of Planning, Design & Construction at University of California Merced for nearly ten years. Tom has more than two decades of leadership experience in planning, design, and construction in the higher education, public, and private sectors. His projects and planning efforts, which have received over fifty regional and national awards for design excellence, leadership and sustainable design, have involved building community engagement and involvement in large, complex projects. He recently became a Thomas Jefferson Award recipient for Public Architecture in 2015.
As Senior Associate Vice President for Physical Planning & Development, Tom leads one of the University’s largest and most dynamic divisions, which includes Facilities Service Enterprises, Capital Planning Design & Construction, and University Property Management. He earned a Master of Architecture with distinction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a registered Architect in the State of California and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Tom has also served as Adjunct Faculty at the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design.
